Wolfgang Amadeus…

Phoenix.

Phoenix is a 4 piece alternative rock band from France.  They have 5 albums including a live recording.  Since their most recent album, Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix, was released, they have exploded in popularity here and in Europe.  And rightfully so.

Phoenix uses a variety of synths and guitar tones to provide a poppy, rock feel, with indi or alternitive overtones in the off-beat rhythms.  Thomas Mars (vox) has a Vampire Weekend, classic pop feel with a French accent that seals the deal.  really the whole band does excellent work in the new album.  Love Like a Sunset pt. I and II really showcases the bands instramental tallent, and whole album flows from begining to end.

Out with the old (Lydia) and In with the New

First Copeland and now Lydia?!  The loss of good music breaks my heart.

Lydia announced that after this tour they will be breaking up for good. This is especially damaging to me, because I was supposed to see them in Ann Arbor last year with Lovedrug, but they didn’t make it to the show because of bus troubles.

But where one thing dies, (or in this case two things died) another is given life. This is the cycle…

The guitarist and bass player from Copeland and one of the vocalists from Lydia (Mindy White) are getting together to start a new project they are calling States.

Exciting things. Love,

Intro/Punk Goes Classic Rock

I just got the Punk Goes Classic Rock album from Fearless Records.  For you who don’t know, Fearless has a series of albums (Punk Goes Crunk, Punk Goes Pop) where they feature their big name bands doing covers of popular songs.

I think the Punk Goes… series has been great so far. ( http://bit.ly/w8VN6 ) Because it takes some creative skills to turn a pop or rap song into a punk rock song.  But its hard to improve on the classics…  Turning a rock song into another-style-of-rock song is hard to do without coming up with the same thing, or butchering it completely.  And the songs on this album did just that.

I have a bias being raised by a man who can name any song that comes on the classic rock radio station.  Classic rock was the genre that got me into music, and you just can’t make it much better.

There was however, one golden nugget in this album, that I cannot stop listening to.  So I will leave you on this positive note.
